Before there were stores across the country, there was Stephenville.
In 2004, Barefoot Campus Outfitter opened its very first location just steps from Tarleton State University. What started as a single store with a simple idea would eventually grow into something much bigger.
The idea was straightforward: college apparel should be as cool, comfortable, and spirited as the students wearing it.
At the time, collegiate shopping often felt the same no matter where you went. We believed students deserved better. They deserved apparel they actually wanted to wear—gear that celebrated school pride while fitting their own personal style.
And there was no better place to start than Tarleton State University.
Tarleton has always been more than a university. It's a community built on tradition, loyalty, and pride. Whether it's Homecoming Week, the Purple Poo, football Saturdays, graduation day, or simply walking across campus, there's something special about being part of Texan Nation.
From the beginning, Barefoot became woven into those experiences.
Students stopped in before their first football game.
Families shopped for move-in weekend.
Graduates picked out alumni gear before crossing the stage.
Over time, those moments became part of our story, too.
But perhaps one of the most unforgettable chapters happened a few years later.
In 2008, Stephenville found itself in the national spotlight after hundreds of residents reported seeing mysterious lights in the night sky. The Stephenville UFO sightings quickly became one of the biggest news stories in the country, bringing reporters, television crews, and curious visitors from all over to Erath County.
Like everyone else in town, we couldn't help but embrace the moment.
So we did what any good Stephenville business would do—we made a t-shirt.
What started as a fun way to celebrate one of the town's most talked-about events quickly became one of the most memorable products we've ever sold. The UFO shirt flew off the shelves, becoming a local favorite and introducing countless visitors to Barefoot for the very first time.
For weeks, people stopped by looking for a shirt, a souvenir, or simply a chance to be part of the story. Long before social media could make something go viral overnight, Stephenville's UFO sighting had become national news, and our little UFO tee became part of the excitement.
Years later, people still ask about those shirts.
While the mystery of what happened in the skies over Stephenville may never be fully solved, one thing is certain: it became a memorable chapter in both Stephenville's story and ours.
Over the years, we've sold thousands of Tarleton tees, hoodies, hats, and gifts. But few products have a story quite like the famous UFO shirt. It's a reminder that Barefoot has always been more than a place to shop—it's been part of the moments, traditions, and memories that make Stephenville special.
Since those early days, both Tarleton and Barefoot have grown.
Tarleton has expanded into one of the fastest-growing universities in Texas. New students arrive every year ready to begin their own journey, while alumni continue to carry their Texan pride wherever life takes them.
Barefoot has grown alongside the university, but our roots remain firmly planted in Stephenville.
This town gave us our start.
This community believed in us first.
And Tarleton State University helped shape the company we are today.
More than twenty years later, every new store, every new design, and every new customer can be traced back to one place.
